Lecce

🇮🇹 Lecce is famous for its spectacular Baroque architecture — but beneath its streets lies a much older story that many visitors never discover.

This 90-minute guided walking tour explores both sides of the city, beginning with the Jewish Museum of Lecce, located in the heart of the medieval Jewish quarter on the site where a 15th-century synagogue once stood.

Underground, you can see fascinating traces of that history, including the mikwa’ot used for ritual bathing and the groove that once held a mezuzah. The museum entrance is included in the tour.

This one is worth discovering:

Back above ground, the walk continues through Lecce’s historic center toward some of its best-known landmarks.

You’ll stop at the extraordinary Basilica di Santa Croce, pass through Piazza Sant’Oronzo with the remains of the Roman amphitheatre, and walk along streets lined with the elaborate façades that made Lecce Baroque so distinctive.

The route eventually reaches Piazza Duomo, surrounded by the Cathedral, bell tower, seminary and Archbishop’s Palace.

What makes this tour especially interesting is the contrast: in just an hour and a half, you move from medieval Jewish Lecce to Roman remains and the city’s grand Baroque monuments.

A particularly good choice if you want more than a standard highlights walk and would like to understand one of the lesser-known chapters of Lecce’s history. ✨
